No matter how “long-wearing” a product may claim to be, “makeup moves throughout the day,” says makeup artist Amrita Mehta. To minimize fading and smudges, layer liquid and cream products beneath powders.

The same goes for your eye makeup: “Trace over liquid or gel eyeliner with a bit of eyeshadow in the same shade. If you are wearing cream eye shadow, set it with a powder for the best payoff,” says Mehta.
For those who have always been skeptical of applying makeup on top of breakouts or flaky dry skin, these two-in-one products target skin-care concerns while giving you the soft, dewy finish of makeup. Plus, a serum-foundation combo can help you achieve a glowing makeup look. “The serum will slightly sheer out the formula, letting skin peek through a bit more, and the skin care in the mixture will really help bring a sheen to the skin,” makeup artist Amrita Mehta, previously told Shape.
According to New York City-based makeup artist Amrita Mehta, the Maybelline New York Fit Me Blush “provides a subtle glow with every swipe” that seamlessly blends into the skin, leaving you with a “natural hint of color.” She continues, telling Allure, “I love the way the radiant (not glittery) finish seamlessly transitions into my highlighter and bronzer.” The result? “No-makeup” makeup in under a minute.

I decided to give NYFW a shot not knowing how it would play out. In the months leading up to my trip, I emailed anybody I could. I even volunteered as a dresser so I could speak to makeup artists backstage & ask them about their journey. I reached out to be added to every assistant roster trying to get a foot in the door and I was sneaking into shows/events just to get the opportunity to talk to people. By some miracle, I landed my first big solo shoot: a 12-page spread in GQ. I decided take a leap & found a place to stay in New Jersey. I gave myself 3 months to figure out how to break into the industry, or else I would return to California. Since then, my work has taken me to incredible places like London, Paris, Milan, India, etc. and I’m lucky to now call New York City: home.

Like many of us, Amrita Mehta discovered the joys of makeup on YouTube. But unlike most, the Bay Area-born, South Asian biology grad decided to pursue it as a career and didn’t back down. “I sent a million emails, reached out to anyone I could, flew to NY, snuck into numerous fashion week parties to network, and finally found a place for myself in the industry,” she explains. “I now spend most of my time between New York and Los Angeles, and am fortunate to work with some really incredible artists like Amber Mark, Raveena and Yaeji.” Describing her work as “pretty with a twist”, Amrita blurs the line between glam and weird – taking a classic look and throwing a more modern, experimental element at it.

You’ll still need a personalized skin-care routine to truly address the root of your skin concerns, but in the meantime, you’ll enjoy the one-two punch and convenience of makeup with powerful skin health properties.

Eye makeup doesn’t have to be complicated — especially if the best eye shadow sticks have anything to do with it. Just ask any Allure editor or slide into the DMs of your favorite makeup artist, and they’ll agree. “Eye shadow sticks are so versatile,” New York City-based makeup artist Amrita Mehtatells Allure. “I love to use them for all-over color or to add a bit of sparkle to any look — I also use them as an eye shadow base and they work really well as a smudged liner, too.
You can count on the conditioning vitamin E in Pixi Beauty’s Lash Booster Waterproof Mascara to keep lashes feeling soft and nourished for hours on end. “Not only does this mascara add lots of volume and length, but its curl-boosting formula also gives your lashes a ‘push-up’ effect,” makeup artist Amrita Mehta says. Both shades, but especially Blackest Blue, do an amazing job opening up her clients’ eyes.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
“It can be soft without being purely pink, edgy without being dark, and vibrant without being neon,” says Amrita Mehta, who is based in Los Angeles. Magenta can be as subtle as a layer of tinted lip oil, as complementary as swaths swirled onto cheeks, or as bold as graphic lines painted around eyes.

Unlike other brow products, brow pens are built for precision. “[They] have a more sheer formula than pomades and pencils, which make them great for creating realistic hair strokes that blend seamlessly with your real hairs,” says Los Angeles makeup artist Amrita Mehta. “The pointed tips provide precise application and allow you to place hairs exactly where needed for that fluffy brow look.”

It’s just about as sought-after as chunky highlights, thin brows, and dramatic blush these days, makeup artist Amrita Mehta tells InStyle.

”Neutrals had their moment,” she says. “The pandemic has us really embracing color and the joy it brings.

Your colourful makeup looks often include face gems and body art. What has your makeup journey been like over the years?
I didn’t wear much makeup until I started doing music professionally about four years ago. And I was very hesitant at first, but then I began experimenting with makeup and working with artists who really treat it like an art form, like Amrita Mehta. These artists have taught me that there is a whole other kind of artistic expression [through makeup].
Makeup artist Amrita Mehta is a big fan of Kulfi Beauty’s Underlined Kajal, a creamy crayon that she says is designed to “glide on with ease but will set and stay in place after 30 seconds or so” for a totally smudge-proof and waterproof finish. She loves the versatility of these colorful liners (Tiger Queen, a terracotta, is shown above), which can be used on the upper lid, waterline, as well as for tightlining and “smudging out into an all-over color or smoky eye look,” she adds.
